environmental graphics
Environmental graphics is what you get when signage stops being individual objects and starts being part of the architecture: a full-height feature wall behind reception, a manifestation pattern across a glass conference room, dimensional logos and copy set into a wall plane, oversized numerals marking a floor, murals and applied graphics running with the circulation rather than pinned to it.
It works when it is coordinated with the build. Surfaces get specified for the graphic rather than the graphic bent around whatever got built — a flat, smooth, matte plane for large print, blocking where dimensional elements need to anchor, lighting aimed so a halo-lit logo has something to glow against, and a material palette that agrees with the finishes schedule. Done at the right moment it costs little more than doing it late; done late it becomes a list of workarounds.
