illuminated sign
An illuminated sign carries its own light source rather than relying on a floodlight aimed at it. In practice that means LED modules behind a translucent face — a lit cabinet, a set of channel letters, a push-through acrylic panel, an edge-lit blade sign — sized and spaced so the face lights evenly with no visible hot spots or dark bands between modules.
The trade-offs are power, colour and code. Every illuminated sign is an electrical assembly: it needs a circuit, a disconnect, UL-listed components, a wet-location rating outdoors, and an electrical inspection. White LEDs are not one colour — the temperature chosen changes how a brand's reds and blues read through the acrylic. And many cities regulate lit signage separately from unlit, with rules on hours, brightness and proximity to residential zones, which is a permitting question before it is a design question.
